How Safe is the LifeSaver Jerrycan?

The Jerrycan has been tested by an independent laboratory to exceed NSF P248 compliance standards, for virus, bacteria, and protozoan cyst reduction by the US Army Public Health Center (MEDCOM)

The LifeSaver Jerrycan was designed to store and carry dirty water. We recommend storing dirty water, either in the Jerrycan or in other storage containers, and filtering through the Jerrycan as and when clean water is required, to prevent recontamination of previously filtered water.

Please note, the LifeSaver Jerrycan and the Activated Carbon Filters are foil-wrapped to give a 10-year shelf life. All other components are packaged within sealed polythene tubing.

Extended shelf life is due to the aluminium barrier foil, which has a water vapour diffusion rate 80 times slower than standard packaged polyethylene. The aluminium-sealed package acts as a barrier to prevent water vapour from entering the pack, and it performs the same protection in reverse as it retains the glycerine within the hollow fibre membranes.

Compact and light water purifier

This is a fantastic bit of kit. I have been using it at the local river to me whilst out on bike rides. It’s a piece of cake to fill up my water bottle and I enjoy being self sufficient. It’s a chalk stream and the purified water tastes divine, much nicer than tap water.

I have changed my review (from 1 star to 4 stars) because Lifesaver took the time to contact me and explain why (with rising costs etc..) why they cant offer free delivery. Although I understand their arguments I still disagree as most online companies do offer free delivery after a certain amount(and repeat customers should be given discounts).
What I will say is I have done a lot of research and looked at a lot of reviews evaluating other products (and spent quite a bit of money trying to find a better product or one at least at the same quality) but have always come back to the same realisation that Lifesaver is the best product bar none. I guess the question is: do you want to compromise on price or your health? I chose price because I know I can rely on Lifesaver for quality and know my health is the most important.

We live in hope!

I bought this LifeSaver unit specifically for emergency use, in case a serious disruption to the water supply means that safe drinking water is no longer readily available.

For that reason, I cannot really say that owning it gives me “peace of mind”. In fact, there is a degree of continuing uncertainty because I have to leave the unit unused and rely on the manufacturer's claims that, if and when the emergency arises, it will perform exactly as intended.

Testing it now would require opening and commissioning it, which rather defeats the purpose of buying and storing a new unit specifically for an emergency.

In that respect, purchasing it feels rather like paying an insurance premium: I have spent a considerable amount of money in the hope that I will never need it, while also trusting that it will work properly if I do.

Bearing in mind the huge cost of this product, I would have liked LifeSaver to consider providing a manufacturer-approved way for purchasers to test their individual unit after purchase and then return it to a fully protected condition for long-term emergency storage. Ideally, this could include a test procedure and a suitable resealing or preservation kit supplied with the product.

That really would provide peace of mind. I would know that the particular unit sitting in my emergency supplies had actually been tested and was working correctly, while still being properly preserved and ready for the day when I might genuinely need it.

Until then, I cannot honestly review its performance because I hope I never have cause to use it.
